Builder vs Window Company: Buying new windows and doors. A Bifold Horror Story
Updated: Aug 25, 2019
A friend-of-a-friend recently told us the following story following her dream kitchen extension with bi-fold doors.
“Last year I was renovating my kitchen and had gorgeous bi-fold doors fitted, which were purchased and installed via our builder and his company. A year on and the doors do not glide, open or close properly, and they appear to be bent and out of shape. It turns out that the builder installed them incorrectly which is a breach of warranty, and the builder has left the country with no way of contact. My only option now is to replace them at my own expense.”
Stories like these are not an everyday occurrence, and there are many builders who would not do a job like this, but this isn’t the first time we have heard a story like this.
This is why we have put this article together to explain the reasons why we recommend buying your doors and windows direct with a glazing company when you are renovating your house.
Double-back Insurance Guarantees and FENSA Certified Fitters
It is a legal requirement that glass and glazing fitters must be FENSA Certified (Fenestration Self-Assessment scheme). Without being FENSA Certified, all newly fitted glazing must be certified with a building regulations certificate.
Builders are rarely FENSA certified, and many only offer their own guarantees, but check this thoroughly as many are just guaranteed through themselves and you would not be covered if they, like our friend, ‘disappear.’
Exclusive Glazing is FENSA Certified and we guarantee all the work we install. Not only do we guarantee our work, we are also covered by a secondary insurance company who covers our work too. Think of it as ‘double insured.’
If our friend-of-a-friend had of used Exclusive Glazing rather than purchasing and installing their bi-fold doors through their builder, they would have been covered, even after their builder left the country.
The Best Price for the Best Product
Buying direct from a glazing company does not automatically mean the cost of new windows and doors will be a lot more expensive, affordable bifold doors do exist, but it does mean the quality will be of a higher standard.
We have known of many builders obtaining cheaper products to install for the customer, which can often lower the quality.
Doors and windows are ultimately there for our safety and protection, which will be compromised with substandard products.
Expert and experienced fitting team
There are many times in life where you would choose a specialist to do a job or role, because they are exactly that, specialists. Certified glass and glazing fitters are trained to fit windows safely, securely, and properly.
You wouldn’t expect a GP to perform surgery on you, would you?
This is something the person in our earlier story could have done with.
As a specialist in the field, your glazing company can provide you with a much higher and more detailed quality of aftercare. In the unlikely event that there should be an issue to address, your glazing company will have the tools on hand ready to see to it, and fix or replace quickly.
As previously mentioned, with the double backed insurance, issues can be seen to long after the initial fitting.
We at Exclusive Glazing really care about quality and customer experience from the start of the process, through the installation, and right through the aftercare.
If you should decide to buy your new windows and doors via a builder for your renovation project, we are happy to work closely with them and install them for you ourselves.
